I Should Meet You

770 words; about a 4 minute read
Mission:
Relics of War
Location: Lounge
Kenneth Hunt was sitting at a table in the lounge going over some strategic reports while sipping his tea. The Endeavour was scheduled to ship out in the morning and he wanted to make himself aware of all the recent movements in the sector they were making their way to.
The doors to the lounge opened as Lieutenant Kimora Reeves entered. Looking around the room, she quickly spotted a familiar face. Taking a deep breath, she walked over to the table where Commander Hunt was sitting at, clearly deep into what he was reading. "Commander Kenneth Hunt."
Looking up from his PADD, Kenneth noticed a very attractive Lieutenant standing over him. "I believe you have me at a disadvantage Lieutenant."
"Lieutenant Kimora Reeves," she replied. "My father told me that I should make it a point to meet you, since you we we're deserving on the Endeavour together."
Clearly confused at first, Hunt immediately came to his senses. "Commodore Jason Reeves is your father," he responded with a smile. "Please have a seat. You would be his oldest daughter."
Kimora pulled out a seat and sat across from him. "That would be correct Commander."
"Please just call me Kenneth."
"Alright then Kenneth," Kimora responded. "He said that you two met during the war, but never gave me much details."
"I was just settling in when your father who was Captain Reeves at the time pulled in at Starbase Pegasus. Being that we were the closest Starbase to the Cardassian border, he came by often."
"So, you two became drinking buddies?"
Hunt couldn't help but to laugh. "Not drinking buddies. But we did do a couple of missions together. You must be screwing up royally if he sent you my way."
"Actually I am doing fairly well thank you," Kimora retorted.
"You're in operations?" Hunt questioned.
"As I recall from your father you wanted to have your own command one day?"
"That's correct."
Kenneth nodded in approval. "Stick with operations. Its going to allow you to be in the middle of everything. And don't allow yourself to become complacent."
From the tone of his voice, Kimora could see that last bit of advice was personal. "Sounds like you have some experience with that one."
"Let's just say that I stayed posted at Starbase Pegasus far longer than I intended," Kenneth explained. "Got to know the staff, families on the base. Never put in an opportunity to move up."
"So, you have issues with being stable?"
The Commander started to chuckle. "No issues with being stable. But stagnant is not good for one's career. Don't get me wrong, volunteered for many missions that took me away from Starbase Pegasus. But I should be doing a bit more."
Thinking about those words, she contemplated the advice and what that meant for herself. "So, I shouldn't stay here long?"
"Learn what you can about operations, then move up when a position opens up on the Endeavour or leave to another post to lead your own Department."
"But wouldn't it be best to remain around people who know me and my skills best?" Reeves inquired.
Taking a sip of his drink, Kenneth nodded. "But that's not always possible. May find yourself passing up multiple opportunities while waiting for your current boss to move on."
Kimora held up her flagging a server over. When the server arrived, the Lieutenant ordered a lemonade. "Have you ever considered factoring in a family into the equation?"
Kenneth was a bit taken back by the question. "Well, I haven't found anyone that I would start a family with. Therefore, I haven't factored a family in my plans. Odds are, I'll have my own command by the time a family becomes a reality."
"So why Strategic Operations?"
"Gives me access to a lot of ship movements in the sector," the Commander answered. "Also puts my face out there to a lot of people. If I do it right, I gain a good reputation. Bad news is if I do a bad job, then a lot of people see it."
Accepting the drink which was brought to her, Reeves took a big gulp. "The greater the risk, the greater the reward type of thing."
"Now you're starting to get it."
Kimora couldn't help to laugh a little. "So I assume my father have you this advice."
"More or less," Hunt admitted. "But the most important thing is to not stress out to much about all of this and simply try to enjoy yourself."
