Mission: The Rules of Acquisition

The ship was running along as smoothly as any Starfleet ship should. Nothing was needed to be done by the engineering department other than the engineers to show up and keep an eye on things. To Jera, it meant long boring days with nothing to do other than sit at a console and stare off into space at the computer monitors. It was quieter than normal today, and to Jera that meant that some people hadn't reported for duty or they had slipped off somewhere. A check of the roster told her that everyone had reported for duty, then headed off somewhere.

"Parker, how long has everyone been slipping off after reporting in?" Jera asked as she turned to face the chief petty officer who was the senior ranking NCO.

"Most of the enlisted have been assigned to workshop duties, but I've noticed some of them and the officers heading to deck 13 a lot all week. Not sure why," the grizzly bear like NCO answered.

"What's on deck 13?" Jera asked, curious.

"Escape pods, maintenance bays, antimatter pods, storage lockers," Parker half mumbled as he rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "Those storage lockers are the special storage bays."

"Take over for me. I'm going to go check them out. The last time we had crew going down there they were running a smuggling ring," Jera said as she stood.

"I remember. You sure you don't want security to meet you down there?"

"Hell no. Not yet anyway," Jera replied. Ignoring the muttered response from the chief, she walked out of engineering and headed to deck 13. It wasn't a long trip, but it gave Jera a few minutes to think over everything so when she arrived she instantly frowned. Other than general maintenance checks there wasn't any reason why nearly a third of the engineering staff should be down there. Checking all of the critical areas and finding nothing, she finally headed to the storage area.

At locker 3-C, Jera found an answer. A pair of engineering crewmen were standing outside the hatch, and both were surprised to see their department chief walk up to them. Raising her eyebrows, Jera pinned both of them with a questioning glare. Rather than answer, the senior crewman simply entered a code into the door controls and stepped aside. Inside, Jera found a high stakes game of poker well underway. Everyone seated at the table froze when they saw Jera, and one even muttered a muted "Oh sh*t".

"Well, isn't this interesting," Jera said.

"I guess we're all being submitted to a captains mast now," the senior ranking officer, Lieutenant Scott, said.

"No, but you're all going to report to your stations and work a double shift today and every day until I forget this ever happened. Who set this up?" Jera said.

"Lieutenant Scott," the ensign sitting at the end of the table pointed towards the lieutenant who had spoken earlier.

"Clear out the room," Jera said. "In a few minutes I'm reporting this to security. After that, I'm going to expect every one of you to report to engineering for reassignment. And I'd better see each and every one of you there."

With that, Jera turned and left the storage locker. Behind her, she heard the frantic scramble as everyone in the room panicked and started trying to grab their credits and get out before security arrived. With an evil grin she tapped her commbadge.

"Ros to security send a detail to deck 13, storage locker 3-C, and you might want to hurry," Jera said. Smiling, she headed back to engineering to wait for the fallout.
