Mission: Shakedown: Taking Flight

Isabella shivered as the wind swept across the flat grassy plain that the away team had landed in. The temperature was already chilly, but the wind had a frigid bite to it that seemed to burrow into you and wrap around the spine. It was a minor discomfort, but it added to the discomfort she was already feeling at being placed in command of the away mission. She had suspected that Commander Valenar might share some of the command responsibility of the team and its mission, but the first officer had instead given Isabella full command and stepped back to an observer’s role. It had shocked her for a moment, but that had passed. Now that the team had arrived on the planet's surface, she had to take a brief moment to organize her thoughts before she gave any orders.

"Lieutenant Heartly, you and Lieutenant Reynolds stay here with the shuttles. Keep them on full standby and monitor the comm. lines."

The chief helm officer and security officer both nodded and stepped away from the group to discuss who would guard which shuttle. Turning to the rest of the team, Isabella decided to play it safe as she finished giving orders.

"Commander Valenar, I'd like you to take point. We'll follow ten meters behind you. Crewman Sizb, I want you to start a perimeter patrol of the main group, out to thirty meters. We'll make for the survey ship first to look for survivors."

As the team started off towards the crash site, Isabella tapped her commbadge and spoke as she walked. "dei`Silvisi to Endeavour, away team has landed and is proceeding to the crash site. We will keep you updated. Dei`Silvisi out."

The walk to the crash site took nearly an hour, not so much because of the distance of the terrain but because of the constant earth quakes that rocked the ground from time to time. From what Isabella had read, the tremors would continue and get more violent until the planet literally broke apart because of the shockwaves that were caused by the quakes. It made Isabella worry about the team's ability to return to the shuttles following the completion of the search and rescue mission, mostly because there was no promise that there would be a secondary withdraw plan that was capable of being executed that would work. But as the team neared the crash site, Isabella wondered if there would be any survivors at all. The survey ship had crash landed, and even though she little experience in judging such situations, she could tell that the ship had impacted into the valley hard. Half of the survey ship was simply crumpled, and the rest looked as if someone had used it for target practice. As the team neared the primary boarding hatch, Isabella couldn't help but blink in surprise as she noticed that the hatch was open.

"Crewman Sizb, I want you to remain outside and keep an eye on things out here," Isabella said. "The rest of the team will break into two groups and search the ship for survivors and any information and data on the ships mission."

After breaking the away team up into two teams, Commander Valenar and Ensign Karen Daniels in one search team and Isabella and Petty Officer Paul Brentworth in the other, they climbed through the boarding hatch and started off in separate directions.
