Mission: Shakedown: Taking Flight

The death throes of Basik III continued at a steady pace, enough to alarm everyone on the Endeavour. Even the ship seemed concerned, as a new alarm rang out every other minute as something happened. Even the ops officer was getting sick and tired of it. Sitting in the command chair, Alistar had resorted to drumming his fingers on the arm of his chair as he waited for some form of news on the away team. Since comms had been lost with the planet surface, there wasn't much that anyone could do other than wait and hope that the team would make it out alright. There was a countdown in progress on how much longer the Endeavour could remain in high orbit of the planet and still make it to minimum safe distance.

"Sir, sensors are detecting both shuttles in flight. They're heading away from the planet," the tactical officer finally reported.

"Not to the Endeavour?" Alistar asked with a frown.

"It looks like they're flying manually and with all the interference and the fact that the planet is breaking apart, they may not have had time to plan their flight," petty officer Killian commented from the helm. Alistar nodded, it made sense. And if they were flying manual with limited time, they would most likely be more interested in getting away from the planet first and then locating Endeavour.

"Helmsman, set a course and take us no less than one AU from Basik III. Break orbit as soon as the shuttles are docked," Alistar ordered.

"Aye sir, course set and ready to execute on your command," Killian reported.

"Sir, the planet is entering the early stages of breaking apart," the ops officer said as a series of fresh alarms sounded.

"Range to the shuttles?" Alistar asked.

"They'll be aboard in three minutes," the tactical officer answered.

"Make it two," Alistar said. "Helm, as soon as both shuttles are down, break orbit and go to full impulse speed."

"Aye sir," Killian said.

The two and a half minutes it took for the shuttles to speed across to the Endeavour and dock seemed an eternity, and Killian took his CO at his word. As soon as both shuttles had made contact with the shuttle bay deck the Endeavour broke away from the planet and went to full impulse speed at the same time. It took several minutes before the ship finally slowed as she reached a distance of 1 AU from Basik III and turned to watch the planet as it continued to break apart. On the bridge, Alistar had ordered the forward view screen to display the visual image. There was a recorder on as well, just in case someone at Starfleet Command wanted to watch.

"Sir, commander Valenar just called for an armed security squad to report to sickbay. I thought you would want to know," the sec/tac officer reported.

"Odd," Alistar muttered. Standing, he nodded. "Keep me updated on the planet. I'll be in sickbay. Officer of the watch, you have the conn."
