Mission: Midnight on the Firing Line

Jera brushed the provisional lieutenant bar that now adorned her collar and hid a grimace as she entered engineering. In the short time she held her position the entire engineering department had improved drastically. People were now actually happy to come to work even when they were assigned duty shifts that they didn't really like. Jera had been told that it was nothing more than the fact that the engineering crew finally had a CEO who not only listened to them and understood what was going on but who also knew the ship and it's systems and wasn't afraid to get her own hands dirty.

The engineering room was humming along as she walked in. Even though the ship was hard docked to the star base, the main power systems and warp drive were still online. Normal protocol dictated that only internal power systems needed for basic daily utilities were to be online while a ship was hard docked, but Jera had heard a rumor that the ship would not be staying long, so she had ordered that all primary systems be left online. The only downside to a short trip other than less extra work was the fact that there wouldn't be any shoreleave allowed. Some of the crew had complained about not being allowed to leave the ship, but the few from engineering who had spoken up had quickly been informed that no shoreleave meant no extra work, which would cause double shifts before and after. Jera had also promised janitorial duties to anyone else who complained as well, and that had also helped.

"Hey chief," one of the engineers said as Jera stopped at the main engineering station.

"How is everything today?" Jera asked as she skimmed the system readouts.

"Nothing major. The primary intake manifolds on those shuttles that were used during that away mission are still acting up. There might be some internal damage as well, but we wanted to get your clearance before we tore it apart."

"Put Walker on it and keep me informed. I'm going to try to see why there's still a power fluctuation in the third backup EPS control system," Jera said.

"Roger that, boss," the ensign said as he started tapping out commands into the console. Satisfied that there were no outstanding projects or problems for her to worry over, Jera grabbed a toolkit and headed for deck 13.
