Mission: Midnight on the Firing Line

Alistar couldn't help but have mixed feelings as he walked through the corridors o the Endeavour. He was proud of the ship and her crew and the way the crew had handled the battle, but the political background that had caused the entire problem didn't set too well with him. People had injured and died for a cause that wasn't their own, and that was a fact that Alistar just couldn't bear easily. Seeing the marks of battle damage that could be seen across the Endeavour, he couldn't help but feel that the entire battle could have been avoided. Turning down a corridor, Alistar spotted his chief engineer and decided to get a preliminary report. Stopping, he glanced at the access way she was working on and noticed a bioneural gel pack. "Are we already having problems with those things?" he asked.

Jera muttered as she slid the ODN connections back into place and pressed the reset key on the control panel. The gel pack hadn't had a problem, but since it was a new type she had wanted to check them anyway. With the critical parts and pieces back in place, she stood and turned towards the captain. "No, if we were having problems with them then half the ship wouldn't be functioning properly," Jera snapped in an aggravated growl. "But they are the new model type and since 99% of the systems and equipment on this ship is either new or never been fielded I wanted to make sure our little meet and greet with the Klingons didn't break anything else."

Alistar winced at the reminder of the battle, although there were plenty of those throughout the ship at the moment. "How bad did we do from an engineer's point of view?" he asked.

Jera frowned as she tucked a loose strand of hair that had escaped her ponytail behind one of her sharp pointed ears before she answered. "Half of the entire power feed from the primary fusion reactors to the shield matrix system overloaded. I checked and that was only because we didn't get the conduit cables we were supposed to. Every power cable on the Endeavour is supposed to be reinforced because of the higher energy and power output. What we got would have worked if we hadn't of taken the hits we did. The primary shields overloaded when that Vor'cha hit us with that main barrage. The auxiliary system kicked in, but the system was feeding extra power to the primary matrix and the cables couldn't handle it. Normally, they would burn out but because some clown didn't install a relay system the conduit exploded."

"Can you install a relay? For that matter, do we have the right power cables to replace everything that blew?" Alistar asked. He had known that some things were going to be trial and error. The Endeavour hadn't really had a proper shakedown cruise, although he supposed that everything on the ship had probably been tested by now.

"We have the materials to fabricate the relay system, and we do have the correct rated cables to repair everything, but I'm planning on replacing the entire power line to the shield system. There are only two problems with that project though," Jera said.

"Only two?" Alistar asked.

Jera hesitated before she spoke. "I'll have to take the entire primary shield system offline while we replace the cables as well as the fusion reactor that feeds the system. Also, we won't have any spare cables for the shield system until we dock at a star base. I've already checked. We have enough of the correct cable to rework the entire primary line and the auxiliary line as well. The only other problem is that doing this will take some time as well."

"How much time," Alistar asked. Already he was looking at one thing that he definitely didn't like. No starship liked that idea of not having shields.

"No less than two days," Jera answered. "And that's a very conservative guess. It could take up to a week."

"Well, we need shields, so permission granted. Just make sure that the power cables you install are the right ones. I really don't want to run into this problem again," Alistar said. "I'll be sure to pass on your report to Starfleet Command so that they can have the other three ships of the series two model check for the same problem."

"Aye, sir," Jera said as she nodded her head towards the access hatch. "Mind if I get back to work?"

"Get back to work then lieutenant," Alistar said with a hint of a smile as he turned away from his CEO and continued down the corridor.
