Mission: Flight to the Stars
It felt good to be in her engineering room with the power systems online once more. Jera couldn't help but take a deep breath in and enjoy the morning hustle as the day shift started to arrive. She had been involved in the refit if only because the Endeavour was her ship and she intended for her ship to keep being the best. Turning around to see everyone who was coming into engineering, Jera spotted two people who caught her eye eight away: Lieutenant Walker and a blonde female cadet who she didn't know at all. Heading over, Jera offered them both a smile. "Walker, I hear that you had a bit of fun during shore leave."
"All lies and propaganda lieutenant. I didn't get into any trouble at all. By the way, I noticed that we have a few new faces," Kev said.
"As a Vulcan would say, indeed," Jera said as she turned towards the cadet. "I'm Lieutenant Ros, chief engineer on board the Endeavour."
"Cadet Kaylyn Wolfe, ma'am," the cadet said. "I've been assigned to the Endeavour for both my midshipman cruise and my final year at the academy."
"You still have a year to go at the Academy and they're putting you on a ship as a regular member of the crew?" Kev asked, blinking.
"It's a new volunteer program for cadets that have done well enough during their first three years. Cadets who meet the requirements are offered to be assigned to star ships as part of an advanced program. I was offered to be assigned to a ship and it was either go ahead and be assigned to a ship now and get advancement on my career or wait an entire year and suffer having to go to a classroom. Naturally, I volunteered," Kaylyn said.
"Smart girl. I like you," Jera said as she nodded in approval.
"Oh, I'm no longer your favorite engineer then?" Kev asked hopefully.
"You're still my favorite person on this ship to torment so don't get your hopes up. Ms Wolfe, I'm assigning you to Lieutenant Walker's team. I want you to keep an eye on him and make his life a living hell for me," Jera said.
"Oh, so now I'm babysitting," Kev said. "No offense cadet," he added.
"No offense taken. But I'm not here to watch. I'm here to work. You can even check the program guidelines. I have to be checked off on everything naturally, but I have been assigned as a regular member of the engineering staff on board the Endeavour," Kaylyn said. "And I prefer to go by Kay."
Kev felt his eyes widen and he chuckled. "Well, I guess I deserved that," he said. "Ok, what am I in charge of boss? Janitorial duties again?"
"No, I've decided that I want you in charge of the primary day shift team. I'll command from the basement, you'll be here with your team unless we have any issues to which you'll be the primary response team," Jera said.
"Sounds good. Kay, care to join me as I go over the checklist for pre departure on the propulsion systems?" Kev asked.
"How long does that take?" Kay asked, trying to hide her excitement.
"You'll find out," Jera said with a smile as she watched the new cadet follow Walker off to meet the rest of their team. After a moment she turned her attention back to the master engineering console. They still had a ship to prepare for departure and she was determined for things to go right this time.
